RENO, Nev. -- The No. 24-ranked Nevada Wolf Pack and No. 6 Stanford Cardinal locked up for a non-conference barnburner, Tuesday, at Peccole Park.
The final outcome was a 16-14 Stanford victory in 10 innings that dropped Nevada to 32-15 overall and improved Stanford to 35-12.
The game featured 11 doubles, one triple, and six home runs, as the Wolf Pack and Cardinal finished the first nine innings locked up at 12-12.
In the top of the 10th, however, Josh Hochgesang connected for his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left, that put the Cardinal in front 15-12. The Cardinal added an unearned run on a throwing error, leaving Nevada in a 16-12 hole heading into the bottom of the 10th.
Hochgesang's two home runs upped his career total to 43, moving him into sole possession of second place with Rick Lundblade (1982-85) on Stanford's all-time list. He finished the game 5-for-6 with five RBI, five runs scored, two home runs, and two doubles.
Matt Ortiz slammed a two-run shot to pull Nevada within 16-14, but could pull no closer as Dan Rich (3-0) got the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Rich pitched himself out of jams in the eighth and ninth to pick up the victory.
Nevada loaded the bases with none out in the ninth, but a Matt Maguire line drive to Hochgesang at third turned into a double play and Justin Martin grounded out to end the inning.
In the eighth, with one out, the score tied, and a runner on third, Rich struck out Nevada cleanup hitter Don Price for the second out and got a fly ball to end the inning.
Rich allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits while striking out two.
Joe Borchard went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and Nick Day was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Nevada's Dru Martinson (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Cardinal will play at home, Wednesday, against Pacific.
