Florida State coach Mike Martin
(On the game) Sometimes you play baseball games where you're very upset when you lose. Stanford deserved to win today. They outplayed us in every phase of the game. They outhustled us, played with more confidence and with more pizzazz. I hate to admit it, but they were better than we were. They deserved to win the ballgame. Now, I was pleased with the way we fought back and we had the tying run on in the sixth and seventh. But that is something we expect at Florida State, because we've been blessed with a good tradition and we feel like we can win every time out. But my hat's off to Stanford. They deserved it.
(On his CWS starting pitching) I'm very, very disappointed and mystified. But what we do now is if we win tomorrow night, these two young men (Nick Stocks and Jon McDonald) have a very good chance of showing what they're made of later on this week. That's the way you have to look at it. We're not throwing the towel in too soon just because we lost to a good baseball team, because we've got a couple more ballgames to play.
(On the even number of hits today) If you're looking for a key to the ballgame, probably the double down the line in the second with the bases loaded was it. He (Thompson) did a great job of staying closed and hitting a changeup. You've got to give him credit. He was very disciplined. But that was probably the key to the ballgame.
Florida State pitcher Jon McDonald
(On his outing) To be successful, I know I have to keep the ball down and today I wasn't. I was leaving the ball up and out over the plate and Stanford was taking advantage.
Florida State catcher Jeremiah Klosterman
(On coming from behind) We've been down before and we really believe this team has what it takes and can come back and win every time, right until the end of the game. Everybody has days and today just wasn't ours as far as the key hits were concerned. But we get a shot tomorrow to come out and get the hits.
Stanford head coach Mark Marquess
(on the game) Obviously, it was a big win for us. We had some timely hits. We didn't have a lot of hits, but they were at critical times. It was a fabulous pitching job by Justin (Wayne). He got a little tired late. I think the difference today was clutch hitting. We got a couple two out hits today. After they scored the four runs (in the seventh inning), we did come back and score a couple runs.
(on whether hitting has carried them at the College World Series) I still think the game is predicated on pitching. We were able to hold them to one run for five or six innings until they got the four runs in the seventh. We didn't do much in the regional or super regional as far as hitting, but it's coming along lately.
(on the early lead) In any game it gives us a little more flexibility. We're able to push it on the bases a little more. I can be a little more aggressive than I'd be normally.
(on Wayne's pitching performance) In a game I think there are four or five times were he (a pitcher) has to come up with big pitches. You hope you win those spots. That's the difference today. When we needed the big hit, we got it. When we needed the big pitch, we go it.
Stanford first baseman John Gall
(on his injuries) I started the season with a broken knuckle. For the first few weeks, it was difficult. It seems like a long time ago. It's going OK.
(on his current hand injury) I doubt it is going to keep me out of the lineup.
Stanford pitcher Justin Wayne
(on pitching performance) We knew about (Marshall) McDougall and Matt Diaz and their hitting power. We tried to push it in on the fastball. They got some hits. The key was we got a few more. I think in the big spots you try to bear down on big spots.
