STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's basketball team (1-3) halted a four-game losing streak, dating back to last season, as the Cardinal upset No. 1 Purdue (2-1), 73-72, in Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal came out with a lot of momentum, never trailing in the game. In the first half, Stanford led by as many as 13 points, shooting 52 percent from the field. At halftime, freshman Lindsey Yamasaki led the team with eight points, playing all 20 minutes. Preseason All-American Stephanie White-McCarty from Purdue led the Boilermakers with 10 of her 24 points on the day. In the second half, Purdue tied the game up at 72 all with just :18 remaining off a driving layup by Katie Douglas. After a timeout, Yamasaki brought the ball up court, passed to Milena Flores, who shot and missed. On the rebound from Flores' shot, senior Regan Freuen was fouled by Douglas. Freuen made one of her two shots, enough to give Stanford the 73-72 upset victory. High scorers for Stanford were Yamasaki with 18 and Carolyn Moos with 16; for Purdue, White-McCarty had 24 points and Douglas had 19.

This is the first time Stanford has topped a team ranked No. 1 at the time of the game since April 4, 1992 when the Cardinal beat Virginia, 66-65, in the semifinals of the Final Four. The Cardinal went on to win the championship in the next game.

The Cardinal remains home this week, hosting Texas Tech on Friday at 7:30 pm and Wisconsin on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
