STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Gymnastics team put on a record-breaking performance on the way to a victory over #13 Oregon State Friday night at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal defeated the Beavers, 195.350-193.375, in the 1999 home opener before a crowd of 612.
The Cardinal took an early lead in the meet by outscoring the Beavers (48.425-48.175) in the first event rotation. However, that is as close as the Beavers would get.
On the next apparatus, the Bars, Stanford clearly dominated as the team set a new school record (49.475) in the event. The 49.475 broke the previous record of 49.325, which was recorded against San Jose State on March 14, 1998. On the bars, Stanford took the top four spots and scored over a full point higher than Oregon State. In the process, senior Amy Murakami tied her own school record with a nearly flawless 9.975. Two other Stanford gymnasts who scored well on the bars were a pair of freshmen, Kristin Jensen (9.925) and Katy Herbert (9.875), who both scored career-highs.
For the evening, Stanford took event championships in three out of four events and tied Oregon in the Vault. Individually, a Stanford gymnast won each event, including Murakami who placed first in both the Bars and the Beam (9.850). Also taking home first place finishes for the Cardinal were sophomore Jenny Wilson, who won the Vault with a 9.800, and senior Sarah Harding, who won the Floor Exercise with a 9.925.
The next meet for the Cardinal is Friday, February 5 when the team hosts Penn State and UCLA in the Chili's "Red Hot" Invitational. The starting time of the meet is 7:30 pm at Maples Pavilion.
