Women's Lacrosse Claims Divison I Western States Title

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford went 5-0 on the weekend with a truly impressive showing! It was gray and raining, the grass on the field was too long, making it difficult to pick up ground balls and the grass was slick - making it hard to pivot.

On Saturday, Stanford played three games (8am, 1pm, 5pm).

Stanford vs. Randolf-Macon (from VA) WON 11-2
Stanford vs. UC Boulder WON 9-4
Stanford vs. Cal WON 16-3

"The win against Cal felt the best. As my assistant coach said - we played like a top twenty (ranked) team that game. It was spectacular! In particular, Caroline Osterwise and Kate Reilly were on the money. Their shooting percentages were absolutely amazing. Osterwise shot 100% and Reilly shot 75%.

On Sunday, Stanford played in the Divison I semifinal against UC Davis. Stanford won 5-3 which sent us to the championship game Colorado College. We won against Colorado College 10-4.

It was hard to play Davis in a tournament game knowing full well that we are travelling back up there to play them in a league game that will determine whether we go into playoffs as the number one seed or not. These games against Cal and Davis are always so emotionally grounded. It is tough to go out there and play without thinking about all the history between these three teams and the rivalries.

The most exciting part about the weekend was seeing that the team continues to improve. You get to a point in the season where you are supposed to peak, then you wonder how long you can hold onto that. Well, we continue to improve. Our transition game and fast break looked great - something that we didn't have a grasp on up until this point. The team looks great.

We are very excited about playing Davis - and challenging for the #1 seed.

Goalie - Stephanie Tuerk had an exceptional weekend with a 64% save ratio.

The defense was led by Christina Gilyutin, the steadfast leader and freshmen - Jenny Silverman and Emily Rodriguez who contributed two and three goals respectively.

On the whole it was a team effort!
