Women's Basketball Opens 1999-2000 Season With Loss to USA National Team

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's basketball team fell to the USA National team November 1 at Maples Pavilion in a 101-58 loss.

The Cardinal was led in scoring by sophomore forward Enjolji Izidor, who was five for eight from the field, and one for two from the line for a total of 13 points. Sophomore forward Bethany Donaphin led the team in rebounds, pulling down four off the boards, and senior guard Milena Flores led in assists with six.

The USA team dominated the game, causing 20 turnovers, and outrebounding Stanford 41-17. The USA Team scored 29 points off the turnovers. The National team ran a 22-0 scoring drive in the first half, preventing Stanford from scoring for over six minutes. The first half ended with a lopsided 60-25 score. Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks star, led the Olympic team in scoring, recording 23 points. Sacramento Monarch Yolanda Griffith led the team in rebounds with nine.

Stanford came back in the second half with a new strategy, and cut the deficit to less than half before time ran out. In the second half, the Cardinal scored 33 points and made seven rebounds. Izidor scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half. The Cardinal limited the USA team to 41 points.

This game marked the reunion between former USA National team coach Tara VanDerveer who won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games and the team members who played for her. The game against Stanford was the first in a 12-game tour for the USA team around the country where they will play premiere college teams, including NCAA defending champions Purdue.

The Cardinal will take on the Slovakia team in an exhibition game on Nov. 12 at 7:30 in Maples Pavilion before opening regular season play on the road at Bay Area rival USF on Nov. 19.
