STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Lacrosse team traveled to the East Coast for the second time this year only to meet with similar results. On Friday they lost a close game to Columbia University, 6-8, and Sunday they were defeated by Hofstra University, 5-18. Against Columbia, the Cardinal put in great effort and answered most of the goals, with strong offensive leadership by sophomores Caroline Osterwise, who put in three goals and Emily Rodriguez, who added two goals. Goalkeeper Rachael Neumann was back in action with nine saves and nine clears.
On Sunday, the team faced a much stronger competitor in Hofstra and put out a tough defensive effort, causing a team total of 11 turnovers along with Neumann's 13 saves in goal. Stanford's goals were led again by Osterwise with two, along with sophomore Liz Britt who also had two. The Cardinal's play this weekend was hurt by the injuries of three starters, senior Hedy Born and freshman Addie Strumolo are out for the rest of the season and junior Katharine Barnes will sit out for now with a sprained ankle, but may be cleared during the postseason.
The team is now 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the Western Women's Lacrosse League, they are looking forward to next week's matchup versus Cal-Berkeley to get ready for postseason action. On Saturday, April 22, they travel to take on the Golden Bears at 2pm.
