STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal hosted the Western States Tournament today, for over 30 schools. The first day proved very successful for the Card, who defeated University of Colorado 11-1, Seattle Club 9-6 and San Francisco Club 9-4. Stanford came out each game prepared to win and showed their opponents their opponents they were looking to repeat last year's tournament victory.
In Game 1, versus the University of Colorado, nine different Cardinal players added goals and freshman goalkeeper Rachael Neumann returned from the injured list to make seven saves. Heading up the offense, sophomore Caroline Osterwise scored three goals and freshman Lauren Dietrich added four assists.
The second game against Seattle was a bit more competition for Stanford, with about fifteen minutes left in the second half the lead was narrowed to one goal. But the Card kept the pressure constant and combined great passes and shots to score as many goals as it needed. Junior Katharine Barnes led the scoring with three goals and goalkeeper Neumann recorded another five saves in goal.
To end the day the Cardinal came back from lunch to finish off the San Francisco Club team. Strong defense and four saves by Neumann kept down the scoring, while the attack players got their job done on offense. Caroline Osterwise added four goals, while sophomore Liz Britt put in three, and Katharine Barnes gave two assists.
The tournament concludes tomorrow, Sunday, April 9, back on and around Maloney field.
