Malibu, Calif. -- Top-ranked sophomore Marissa Irvin, third-ranked freshman Laura Granville and 38th-ranked senior Teryn Ashley each secured first round victories at the 2000 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships today at Pepperdine University.
Irvin, the 1999 NCAA singles runner-up, went to three sets in her opening match with 28th-ranked Michelle Faucher of Texas. Irvin won the match 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and will face tenth-ranked Esther Knox of Georgia in the second round tomorrow.
Granville captured her first ever NCAA singles tournament victory, with a straight-set win over 50th-ranked Vlaska Uhirova of Texas, 6-2, 6-2. Ashley also posted a straight-set victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over 40th-ranked Kristi Dascoli of Ohio State. Granville will take on 55th-ranked Marissa Catlin of Georgia in the second round, while Ashley faces 20th-ranked Jahnavi Parekh of Baylor.
Sophomores Keiko Tokuda and Lauren Kalvaria made early exits from the tournament with first round losses. Tokuda, ranked 32nd, fell to 37th-ranked Kathy Sell of Duke, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Ninth-ranked Kalvaria lost a three set battle with sixth-ranked Alison Bradshaw of Arizona State 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
In doubles, Irvin and Ashley advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Erica Biro and Brooke Siebel of Duke, while Granville and Tokuda defeated Carlijn Buis and Delphine Troch of William & Mary 6-3, 7-6. Kalvaria and partner Gabriella Lastra fell in the first round to Cal's Anita Kurimay and Karoline Borgersen 6-1, 6-1.
Tomorrow's singles matches will begin between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with doubles to follow.
