NCAA REGIONAL AT STANFORD, CALIF.
POST-GAME QUOTES
May 26, 2000 (7:00 p.m. - Game 1)
Sunken Diamond
#4 Fresno State vs. #1 Stanford (May 26, 2000)

FRESNO STATEHead Coach Bob Bennett (on Stanford): "They are a very good ballclub with experience. Young picks it up a notch when he has to. That is a sign of a very good pitcher."

(on task at hand now): "You take it one game at a time. It is much easier if you are in the winners bracket, but if you aren't there are a lot of teams that have come out of the losers bracket to get back in it. You have to play very well when you get in the tournament. You try not to look ahead about anything except the game that you are playing. As long as you keep winning that game, you will be alright. When you don't you start to press."

Anthony Acevedo (on Young): "Young came out throwing well. We knew he was going to be around the strike zone. But he was hirable. I thought we had a good chance to get after him tonight. We hit some balls that could have gone our way that would have made the game a lot different.

(does 4-1 deficit seem greater): "I don't think so. I still had confidence in my team and myself that we would be able to come back and mount a rally. He was getting tired in the latter innings. He started leaving his breaking stuff up and his fastball was a little slower.

Shawn Hannah (on margin of error Vs Stanford): "Any time you play Stanford, every little thing could cost you a run here or there. I don't think tonight our errors hurt us. Obviously if we make some plays here or there the game could have been different. Every time we play a situation like this, an error could come back to haunt you. You have to play your top game.

Nick Garcia (is Stanford improved from start of season): "They didn't seem much different. We just have to take advantage of our opportunities."

(not intimidated): "Everyone knows we belong here so there is no need for intimidation. Everyone is out here to play.

STANFORD

Coach Mark Marquess (opening comments): "It was a great college baseball game. Both pitchers pitched a great game. Hannah was tough. His fastball was really moving. He got the breaking ball over. I wasn't sure if we were going to get any runs off him. It was a great college baseball game. I was pleased with Jason's performance. He had great command, didn't walk anybody, and struck out nine guys. Late in the game, he kept pumping it in there and did a great job. We had great fan support. It was a tough one to lose for either team because both pitchers pitched well.

(on complete game): "When you are in four-team regional it is imperative that you conserve your pitching. If you lose tomorrow you have a bunch of games to play. Normally when Jason goes out he gives us a chance to win, as he did tonight.

Jason Young (on stepping up a notch after triple): "That leadoff triple was a great way to get them started. I knew I needed to punch out the first guy because they could have just touched it and get a run. I was able to punch out the first two guys and get the last guy to ground out to O'Riordan at second. I do try to step it up when they get that leadoff hitter on. I try to get after them a little bit more."

(on what Damien Alvarado said to him in 9th): "He reminded me that I was getting a little excited there. He came out and said, "Relax a bit, and pump that next one in there."I was starting to overthrow a little bit. I started to throw it down the middle because I knew they were taking."

Craig Thompson (on RBI-base hits): "I thought it would be a close game so that when we got runners on base, it was real important to score them."
