June 3, 2000 (1:00 p.m. - Game 2)
Sunken Diamond
Nebraska vs. Stanford

NEBRASKA

Head Coach Dave Van Horn (opening comments):
"Stanford's starter wasoutstanding. He had great stuff, command of both sides of the plate, withthree or four different pitches. He didn't give us much of a chance. For us,Shane did a great job. He gave us a chance to win the game into the 6th, 7thinning. They had a one-out walk, then a hit and run which was perfect. Afterthat, it opened the door for them. Justin got back on the mound and said,?You're not going to score anymore.' He pitched great and credit goes tohim, because he gave them the opportunity to gain confidence and he did agreat job.

(how did Shane start?):
"Basically he came to us today about 15 minutesafter we got here and felt good. When he told us he was ready to go, he wasthe pitcher that had the most amount of rest. We were going to go with oneof two lefthanders and one of them was a little sore anyway. He pitched goodenough to win. We didn't help him out on the offensive side.

(on getting close):
"A couple times in the 3rd and 4th inning, I thought wehad a shot at them. We had a couple guys on, we had just tied the game.Shane gave us a couple quick innings out there. Both times we had runners inscoring position with two outs and we didn't get a hit. If we had found ahole there and got the lead, who knows what might have happened. From the5th inning on, he (Wayne) just dominated."

(on reacting tomorrow):
"We will be fine. We have been doing it all year. Welost the first game of the Big 12 tournament and found a way to do it. Thementality of the team is go play. It is another day. I told them not to feelany pressure and just go out and have fun.

(on lack of production from middle of order):
"It hasn't done a very goodjob. It is a couple reasons. Number one, good pitching from the other sideand some guys swinging at some bad pitches, out of the zone. Tomorrow is anew day and it might be the day for them.

Shane Komine (on pitching):
"I woke up this morning and felt great. I cameout and did a little throwing before the game and told the coach I feltgreat. I ran out of gas towards the later innings.

(on Wayne):
"Throughout high school I saw him pitch. I knew he was a greatpitcher. Coming up here and the job he has been doing in college, he hasmade a name for himself in college baseball and that is why he is going tobe a high draft pick. I give him a lot of credit for today's win. He kept usoff balance all day and kept us from getting that big inning.

Adam Stern (on Justin Wayne):
"He is definitely one of the top pitchers wehave faced all year. He threw all of his pitches for strikes. He is tough. He has a real good slider and he worked ahead. He threw his slider, which isreal good. He had a nice changeup and something else he threw. We didn'tknow what it was.

STANFORD

Coach Mark Marquess (opening comments):
"It was a fantastic game by two goodpitchers. Shane Komine, who broke his jaw a week ago, was unbelievable andhe had great stuff. Justin Wayne has pitched well all year, but never in abigger game than today. It was a do or die game for us, but we got some keyhits and a big home run by Arik (VanZandt).

(on Komine):
"I thought that maybe [Nebraska] would wait another day beforepitching him. But I had never seen him before, so maybe he wasn't as sharp. If he is sharper than he was today, than he's really good. He had goodlocation, but maybe late in the game his breaking ball wasn't getting over.Give him credit, he pitches a good game."

(on the bottom of the lineup):
"Once we got players in those spots a stuckwith it, they really started to produce. It made the opposition's pitchersreally focus and our offense has picked up later in the season."

Chris O'Riordan (his impressions of Komine):
"His fastball was really goodand he was locating it on the outside corner a lot. Especially early he wasbring his breaking stuff and getting over, than painting the outside cornerwith his fastball."

Arik VanZandt (his impressions of Komine):
"He kept me off balance with hisbreaking ball and fastball. In the later innings the breaking ball wasn'tquite as sharp as it was in the early innings. And we were able tocapitalize on that."

(on his home run):
"We were trying to move the runner over, with a bunt orhit, but I wasn't able to do my job with that. So with two strikes I got thego ahead and I got a nice high pitch. More than anything else I didn't do myjob."

Justin Wayne (on his performance as the Stanford starting pitcher):
"Everything worked well today. I think we had a good game plan and that isthe advantage of being able to pitch in the second game. We got out of somejams as a team early and then got some key hits."

(on the later innings):
"As the game moves on you have to bring more to thetable. When you can see the finish line ahead, you get that extra adrenalineand you give a little more."
