Stanford Upsets #13 Vanderbilt - Women's Lacrosse

March 9, 2001

Stanford, CA - Stanford came out strong today and the combination of stellar offense and defense led to their first win over a top-15 team. Senior tri-captain Katharine Barnes and sophomore Liz Lanese never to let up on the Commodores, putting in 4 goals each. Also making a huge impact was junior tri-captain Caroline Osterwise who made 5 goals happen in the second half. Osterwise tallied 3 of her own and assisted for 2, including a quick-stick goal by Lanese to seal the Cardinal victory.

Stanford refused to let the Commodores ranking scare them as they matched goals early in the first half and went in to halftime ahead 8-6. The second half proved very emotional and physical for each team, with 4 cards handed out and both teams using up their timeouts. After 3 unanswered Cardinal goals, Vanderbilt took a timeout to reorganize and came within 2 as senior Amanda Rice scored 3 consecutive goals. With 10:49 left in the match, the Commodores brought the score to 13-11 on an unassisted goal by senior April Tellam. But after Osterwise found Lanese about a meter away for a quick-stick goal, the Cardinal never looked back. Staying strong, the team slowed down the speed of the game and scored 2 more goals to finish off their 13th ranked opponent.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Neumann recorded 11 saves and 13 clears in the match, she now has 65 saves this season. Barnes, who won 5 draw controls today, leads the team with 16 goals on the season. Freshman Abbi Hills had 4 caused turnovers in the game, and Osterwise had 6 groundballs.

The team is now 6-1 Overall, 3-0 WWLL. The Cardinal concludes this week's three-game homestand on Sunday at 1pm against the Bucknell Bison.
