Stanford, Ca - The Tony Azevedo era has started at Stanford.
The redshirt freshman, the youngest member of the 2000 United States Olympic Water Polo Team, opened his collegiate career with four goals to lead top-ranked Stanford to a season-opening 11-3 victory over UC Davis on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Complex.
Azevedo, who is considered one of the world's great water polo players, even though he is only 18 years old, scored Stanford's first goal of the season at 5:20 of the first period. Azevedo then added a goal in each of the next three periods.
Brian Darrow and Mark Amott each added two goals for the Cardinal, coached by Dante Dettamanti who is retiring after the 2001 season. Dettamanti is in his 25th year at Stanford.
Stanford is now 32-0 in the series against UC Davis.
