STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) recorded a hat-trick for No. 3 Stanford Friday evening, as the Cardinal shutout Dartmouth 4-0 in the opening round of the 5th annual Stanford/Nike Invitational in front of 1,773 at Maloney Field.
Stanford (5-0-0), which had been idle since a 3-1 victory against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 9, outshot the Big Green 16-8 in the home opener for the Cardinal. Stanford improves to 8-0-1 in Stanford/Nike Invitation competition and has yet to allow a goal in nine matches.
Levesque beat the keeper from 10 yards out at the 21:48 mark for Stanford's first goal of the game, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. The junior forward would then notch his second score of the contest at 22:59, connecting off a pass from senior Derek Shanahan (St. Charles, Ill.).
The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead into the second half and proceeded to bury Dartmouth (2-2) with two quick scores. Sophomore Mike Wilson (Plimmerton, New Zealand) found the net at the 50:02 mark, as Shanahan and Taylor Graham (Fair Oaks, Calif.) combined on the assist. Wilson would later hook up with Levesque, as the Cardinal forward blasted his third goal of the night past the keeper at 54:17 to round out the scoring.
Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Terris (Newton, Mass.) turned in a solid performance, recording two saves in 58:18 in goal. Freshman Robby Fulton (West Linn, Ore.) and senior Alan Resnikoff (La Jolla, Calif.) both saw time in goal during the second half. Gebre-Medhin notched four saves.
The Cardinal used 24 different players in the victory, which also was the first home win for head coach Bret Simon, who is in his first year with the team.
In the opening game of the tournament, Fresno State and California battled to a 1-1 time in double overtime.
Stanford will be back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Fresno State in the final match of the 2001 Stanford/Nike Invitational. Dartmouth and California play at 11:30 a.m.
