San Marcos, Texas - The No. 16 Stanford women's soccer team defeated No. 10 Texas A&M 4-2 Friday night at the Southwest Texas State Soccer Complex. With the win, the Cardinal move to 2-0 on the season heading to their match-up at Texas Sunday night.

Stanford got on the scoreboard first on the Cardinal's first corner kick of the game. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) took the corner and set up Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA), who scored the game's first goal on a header from the left side at the 19:25 mark.

Following an Aggie goal at 20:02, Stanford took control of the half when Withers netted her second goal on a 20-yard blast inside the left post at 39:44 to go up 2-1.

The Cardinal took a 3-1 lead at 52:15 when Katherine Harrington(Fort Worth, TX) played a long ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA). Wallis then found Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) who slipped the ball by the diving Texas A&M keeper.

Texas A&M scored off a corner to bring the score to 3-2 at 60:22. The final point of the game was started by Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) who kicked a long ball to Ward. The sophomore then beat the keeper one-on-one to put Stanford ahead for good 4-2 at 65:05.

"It was a solid performance tonight," said head coach Andy Nelson. "We defended well and put a lot of pressure on them. There are still things we need to work on, but we got a lot of help from many different players. It was very nice to score four goals tonight."

The 2-0 Cardinal will battle Texas Sunday night at the Mike A. Myers Stadium, concluding their 17-day road trip. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. (CST).
