LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 hard-fought defeat to UCLA in front of 3,466 at Frank W. Marshall Field. The Cardinal are now 9-1-0 on the season after losing their Pac-10 opener for the second time in as many seasons.

UCLA forward Tim Pierce gave the Bruins the lead for good, blasting a shot past Stanford netminder Andrew Terris at the 87:48 mark and putting UCLA ahead 2-1.

The Brunis got on the board first and held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the contest when midfielder Dru Hoshimiya scored on a header in the 13th minute. The Cardinal would later knot the game at 1-1 at 71:26 when senior Derek Shanahan lofted a shot from 18 yards out past outstretched UCLA goalkeeper Zach Wells, following an assist from junior Todd Dunivant. Both teams would continue to push for the go-ahead goal until UCLA's Pierce scored the game-winner.

UCLA outshot the Cardinal 14-9 in the game, despite committing 22 fouls in comparison to Stanford's five.

Stanford netminder Terris was solid in goal, totaling four saves in the loss.

Stanford will be in action again this Friday, when the Cardinal battles the California Golden Bears at 7:30 p.m. at Maloney Field.
