STANFORD, Calif. - No.5 Stanford bounced back from last Sunday's conference loss to UCLA in fine fashion, torching rival California 4-0 in front of 2,212 raucous fans at Maloney Field Friday evening. The Cardinal improve their overall record to 10-1-0 (1-1-0 in Pac-10 action), while the Golden Bears fall to 6-5-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

Freshman Darren Fernandez (Benoni, South Africa) scored the first goal of his collegiate career at the 27:15 mark to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead, connecting off a pass from junior Todd Dunivant (Wheat Ridge, Col.). Both teams would battle for the remainder of the first half but fail to score.

Stanford erupted for three second half goals, the first coming from Dunivant at the 53:21 mark when he scored off a free kick. Five minutes later, freshman Matt Janusz (Littleton, Col.) fired a shot past California goalkeeper Josh Saunders for his fifth goal of the season following an assist from Fernandez. The Cardinal capped their scoring outburst in the 66th minute when junior Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) dished the ball to junior Johanes Maliza (Chicago, Ill.) who angled a shot past the keeper- much to the delight of the large crowd, which was the largest of the 2001 season thus far at Maloney Field to watch a men's or women's match.

The Cardinal managed to outshoot the Golden Bears 11-8 in the contest, despite a slow first half start. Junior Andrew Terris (Newton, Mass.) played the first 72:17 and notched three saves before giving way to freshman Robby Fulton (West Linn, Ore.) who played the final 17:43. California netminder Saunders recorded two saves in 90 minutes of play.

24 players appeared in the contest, matching the season-high previously set against Dartmouth earlier this year on Sept. 28 in the first round of the Stanford/Nike Invitational.

Stanford travels to Santa Clara on Sunday for its final non-conference match of the year. The Cardinal and Broncos square off against one another at 6 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
