STANFORD, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, the Cardinal scored three times in the first half of play en route to a 4-1 triumph over Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. Stanford outshot Saint Mary's 19-3 on the day, including 12-0 in the first half.
Stanford (8-0-0) used a balanced offensive attack against the Gaels (5-3-1), as three different players found the net in the victory. Stanford, which has now scored four goals in each of its last four wins, got on the board first when freshman Matt Janusz (Littleton, Col.) connected on a shot from 30 yards out to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. Janusz would be also involved in the second goal of the day for Stanford with an assist, which came at the 20:43 mark when junior Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) beat a Gael defender and increased the lead to 2-0.
Levesque, who has now tallied either a goal or an assist in each of the last four contests, scored his second goal of the match at 26:37 following an assist from senior Derek Shanahan (St. Charles, Ill.).
The Cardinal struck again right after the start of the second half. Junior Johanes Maliza chipped in with his first goal of the season at the 46:32 mark, with Janusz and junior Taylor Graham (Fair Oaks, Calif.) assisting on the score.
Nick Marcum of Saint Mary's scored the Gael's only goal of the day, finding the net at 78:21, connecting on a cross from Niles Almarinez and Diego Rovira.
Cardinal netminder Andrew Terris (Newton, Mass.) played the first half for Stanford, and freshman Robby Fulton (West Linn, Ore.) guarded the net during the second 45 minutes- notching two saves in the process.
Stanford will travel to San Francisco Friday night to battle the Dons at 7 p.m. before heading to UCLA on Sunday, when they will open Pac-10 play against the Bruins at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles.
