STANFORD, Calif. - In a match in which both teams had numerous opportunities to score, No. 3 Stanford and visiting UCLA played to a 0-0 tie after 120 minutes of play Friday evening at Maloney Field. The draw is the first of the season for the Cardinal, who are now 13-1-1 on the year and 3-1-1 in the Pac-10.
The tightly-contested first half, which featured more combined fouls (19) than shots (7), would be a prelude to the second 45 minutes. Each team continued to press in the second half, with the Cardinal outshooting the Bruins (7-6-4 overall, 2-2-1 Pac-10) 7-2.
The overtime periods included several more scoring chances for both teams, including a flurry of shots by the Cardinal in the final minute of both periods that either sailed wide or hit the crossbar and goalposts.
"I thought we played well tonight," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon. "We had several opportunities to score but just did not convert in the end. The important thing is that we're still in a good position in the conference and our intensity level was at a peak in tonight's game."
Leading the charge for Stanford, was junior forward Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) who had five shots, one of which was on goal. Senior Aaron Biddle (Bordentown, N.J.), sophomore Abe Geiger (East Lansing, Mich.) and freshman Matt Janusz (Littleton, Col.) all recorded two shots for the Cardinal.
Stanford netminder Andrew Terris (Newton, Mass.) had one save in 120 minutes of play, while UCLA goalkeeper Zach Wells notched three saves.
Having played their final regular season home match of the year, the Cardinal will be in action Nov. 11, when it travels to Berkeley to face California at 2 p.m. Stanford will then conclude its season with road matches at Washington and Oregon State one week later.
