STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title with a 1-0 double-overtime victory over No. 11 Washington on Friday evening in Seattle. The shutout was the 11th of the year for the Cardinal, who can win the Pac-10 outright on Sunday with either a tie or victory at Oregon State.

Stanford (15-1-1, 5-1-1 Pac-10) defeated the Huskies for the second time this season and has allowed just one goal in its last seven games.

Stanford freshman Darren Fernandez (Benoni, South Africa) blasted a shot from about 10 yards out past several Washington defenders for the game's only score, coming at the 110:33 mark of double-overtime. Junior Johanes Maliza (Chicago, Ill.) was credited with the assist on the play, his third of the 2001 campaign..

The Cardinal had numerous chances to score, and outshot the Huskies (12-5-0, 3-4-0 Pac-10) 21- 14 in the contest. Junior Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine), named Pac-10 Player of the Year just yesterday, recorded eight shots on the evening and Maliza tallied four shots- three of which were on goal. Washington's C.J. Klaas notched a team-high four shots.

The Cardinal goalkeeping effort was tremendous, as freshman Robby Fulton (West Linn, Ore.) made a career-high six saves in 110:33 of action. Fulton, who has appeared in nine games this year, is holding opponents to a 0.24 GAA (goals against average).

Stanford will conclude its regular season Sunday, when it travels to Oregon State to square off against the Beavers at 1 p.m. The men's selection show for the NCAA Tournament is scheduled to air Monday at noon, when the Cardinal will learn its postseason status.
