California Head Coach Kevin Grimes
On the game:
I think in regulation, it was a hard-fought match, but I really thought we created the better chances to score. At the end of regulation, we had them outshot 12-3. Even though it was an even game, end to end, I thought we created more goal-scoring chances. So I was really proud of the effort we gave. Even going into overtime, I thought Santa Clara took over a bit. They seemed to get a little bit more territorial advantage. As the game creeps that late into overtime, you can see sides fatiguing. I think both teams played outstanding.
Cal player Austin Ripmaster
On his missed scoring opportunity at the end of regulation:
It was a great ball through from Chris (Roner). I got on the end of it and touched it around the keeper. The ball was kind of bouncing and it slipped off my foot a little bit. And I really couldn't believe it. But no excuses, I missed a good chance to end it there. I think it's really unlucky the game didn't go our way this time. I think the chances I had tonight were missed due to my inability to finish.
Cal goalkeeper Josh Saunders
On the winning goal:
The ball was bouncing. We had the opportunity to clear it wide or clear it outside. We tried to shield it out of bounds instead of get it out and give them a corner kick. They got the ball and made the best of it and put it away.
Santa Clara Head Coach Mitch Murray
On the game:
I just want to congratulate Cal for their effort. They played extremely well. On the other side, I'm very proud of our guys. They worked very hard and never quit believing in themselves. It seemed the longer the game went, the stronger they got.
Santa Clara player Anthony Chimienti
On his game-winning goal:
I thought the ball was going out of bounds first of all. The ball almost seemed like it was floating there for a second. I just stuck my foot out and tried to bring it as close to me as I could. I saw it pop into a pretty good position, so I just shot it and luckily enough, it went in.
