STANFORD, Calif. - Cardinal freshman Matt Janusz (Littleton, Col.) registered his first career hat-trick and the Stanford defense took care of the rest in a 3-1 win over Santa Clara in a NCAA men's second round contest on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field.

The Cardinal, seeded third in the College Cup, improves to 17-1-1 and advances to next weekend's third round game against Portland (1-0 winner over Washington). That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Maloney Field, where the Cardinal have yet to lose this season. Santa Clara, the West Coast Conference champs, end their season at 12-9-0.

Matt Janusz- starting in place of junior Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) who was forced to miss the game as a result of a red card in the previous match- gave Stanford a 1-0 lead when he one-touched a shot to the lower right corner. Derek Shanahan (St. Charles, Ill.) flicked a header to the far post and Janusz was there for the volley.

Midway through the first half, Stanford's Todd Dunivant (Wheat Ridge, Col.) passed the ball to Matt Moses (Laguna Beach, Calif.), who took a shot that deflected off a Santa Clara defender and went right to Janusz, who fired past the keeper for a 2-0 Cardinal lead.

Santa Clara scored at the 42:41 mark when senior Anthony Chimienti drilled a shot to the upper right corner to make it 2-1. Stephen Biondolillo and Jamil Walker were credited with assists on the score.

Stanford pushed its lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute. A corner kick by Dunivant sailed past the box and over to the left sideline. Johanes Maliza (Chicago, Ill.) then sent a cross back into the box where Taylor Graham (Fair Oaks, Calif.) headed it to Janusz. Janusz then rifled a shot to the lower right corner for his third score of the game. The Cardinal held an 8-5 shot advantage in the match.

Cardinal netminder Andrew Terris recorded two saves, playing the complete 90:00. Santa Clara's Steve Cronin and Rusty Johnson both saw time in goal for the Broncos.
