PORTLAND, Ore. - Three different Cardinal players scored as No. 6 Stanford recorded a 3-0 shutout against Gonzaga in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in Portland.
Stanford (1-0), which netted its first goal of last season at the 8:19 mark of the first half in their opening contest against Xavier, took the lead even quicker this year. Senior Matt Moses gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead when he found the net at the 1:53 mark of the first half, scoring off an assist from fellow senior Aaron Biddle.
Senior midfielder Derek Shanahan connected for Stanford's second goal of the day at 49:30, heading in a cross from Moses to make it 2-0. Junior forward Roger Levesque would cap the Cardinal scoring with a chip shot that sailed over the head of Gonzaga (0-1) goalkeeper Mike McCarthy at 73:38 for the final Stanford goal. Senior Lee Morrison assisted Levesque on the final tally.
Cardinal junior goalkeeper Andrew Terris was impressive in goal, notching two saves on the day in his first career start. Freshman Robby Fulton also saw time in goal, playing the final 12:11.
Stanford outshot the Bulldogs 12-5, as seven different players registered shots on goal.
The victory was the first win under new head coach Bret Simon, who joined the Cardinal after serving as the men's head soccer coach at Creighton University for the past six seasons.
The Cardinal will square off against host school Portland on Monday afternoon. The Pilots were scheduled to open their season later this afternoon against Denver.
