PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Todd Dunivant's goal in the 22nd minute was all the offense No. 6 Stanford needed as the Cardinal shutout Portland 1-0 Monday afternoon.
Stanford (2-0-0) controlled play for much of the game, but sent only five of its 16 shots on goal. The Cardinal tallied the game's only score at 21:20 when Dunivant took senior Aaron Biddle's cross behind the 18-yard box, and sent a 25-yard bullet strike past a surprised Portland (0-2-0) defense.
The Cardinal outshot the Pilots by a 16-10 margin, and held an 11-3 advantage in shots in the first half.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Terris turned in his second consecutive strong performance, recording three saves. Portland netminder Curtis Spiteri notched four saves in the loss.
The Cardinal will be in action again on Friday, Sept.7, when it matches up against Loyola Marymount at 11:30 a.m. in the adidas Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley, Calif.
