Cleveland, Ohio - Stanford University, winner of the last seven Division I Sears Directors' Cups, holds the top spot as the fall 2001-02 season comes to a close. The Sears Directors' Cup is presented by the nation's athletics directors.
Stanford scored in seven of the eight fall sports and placed six teams inthe top 10, including national championships in women's volleyball and men'swater polo, to record 521 points. The Cardinal also placed second in men'scross country, third in men's soccer, fifth in women's cross country, ninthin women's soccer and 17th in I-A football. The Sears Directors' Cup wasdeveloped as a joint effort between the National Association of CollegiateDirectors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDAand sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
North Carolina, the inaugural Sears Directors' Cup champion, is second with305 points, including a national championship in men's soccer. UCLA is thirdwith 271 points, followed by Colorado in fourth with 251 points, and BrighamYoung, in fifth with 228 points.
These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men'scross country, field hockey, football, women and men's soccer, women'svolleyball and men's water polo. In addition to Stanford and North Carolina,winning national championships were Brigham Young in women's cross country,Colorado in men's cross country, Michigan in field hockey, Miami (Fla.) inI-A football, Montana in I-AA football, and Santa Clara (Cal.) in women'ssoccer.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports --10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.Final fall standings follow. Please note that standings published midseasonare unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon thecompletion of the spring season. Codes are as follows: W - women, M - men,CC - cross country, FH - field hockey, FB - football, SOC - soccer, VB -volleyball, and WP - water polo.
