Stanford, Calif. - Community Day, which is designed especially for families, is an all-day open house featuring music, arts, athletic exhibitions, science displays, faculty lectures, a kids' carnival and a health fair with child car seat safety checks. All Community Day events are free and open to the public, and the first 2,500 kids will receive flying disks from the Stanford Ultimate Frisbee Team.

Community Day events will begin on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. with a multi-faith service on the theme of community at Memorial Church. At 11 a.m., programs and exhibits will open throughout campus, including:

science and research exhibits in the Science and Engineering Quadrangle, athletic events at the Arrillaga Family Sports Center, Cobb Track and Elliot Field, art exhibits and musical performances at and around the Cantor Center, student cultural exhibits near the Main Quadrangle on Serra Mall, health displays and child car seat checks around Encina Hall, a community carnival for youngsters behind the Ford Center, and tours of campus and outdoor sculptures.

At 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., Stanford faculty members, including Deborah Stipek, dean of the school of education, and Philip Pizzo, dean of the school of medicine, will give neighbors an opportunity to return to the classroom. From 1 to 2 p.m. Stanford President John Hennessy, Provost John Etchemendy and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Isaac Stein hope to meet Community Day participants individually at the Community Day information tent in the Science and Engineering Quadrangle. Programs and exhibits will close at 3 p.m.

Community Day will be held in conjunction with the annual Founders' Celebration, which commemorates the lives of founders Leland and Jane Stanford and their son, Leland Jr. The celebrations will include a spirited procession beginning at 2:30 p.m. to the Stanford Mausoleum, which will be opened to the public. A time capsule planted by Jane Stanford more than a century ago will be opened during the celebrations.
