Stanford and Washington continue their three-game series Saturday ... Washington surprised the second-ranked Cardinal, 3-1, in the series opener behind a six-hit complete game from Shawn Kohn ... Stanford and Washington are now both tied for third place in the Pac-10, 1.5 games behind first place USC (7-3 Pac-10) and 1.0 games behind second place Arizona State (8-5 Pac-10) ... Stanford had a pair of streaks broken with Friday's loss as the Cardinal dropped its first series opener of the season after winning 10 in a row and had its eight-game win streak versus the Huskies snapped ... Stanford has won 12 straight regular season series and needs to sweep the final two games of this series versus Washington to extend the series win streak to 13 ... Stanford is 5-5 in the middle game of series and 7-3 in series finales ... Stanford has come from behind in 12 of its 26 victories ... STANFORD BASEBALL QUICK INDIVIDUAL NOTES
National Player of the Year candidate Jason Cooper was named Pac-10 and NCBWA National Player of the Week after hitting four homers and driving in 10 runs in four games last week ... Cooper continues to lead the team with a .386 batting average, 10 homers and 39 RBI ... Chris O'Riordan (.364, 229-629) has moved to the top of Stanford's career batting average list, two percentage points ahead of Jack Shepard (.362), after going 20-for-42 (.476) on his current nine-game hit streak ... O'Riordan is second among regulars with a .370 batting average, leads the team in hits (54) and bases on balls (23), has hit safely in 32 of 35 games and has reached base in all 35 games this season ... Brian Hall leads the club with eight stolen bases and is perfect on the basepaths in eight chances ... Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie, Tim Cunningham and John Hudgins is a combined 17-2 with a 3.70 ERA ... Guthrie has won 11 consecutive decisions, while leading the team in strikeouts (73) and innings pitched (79.1) ... Andy Topham became the first Cardinal player to triple twice in a game when he had a pair of three-baggers in a 19-2 win versus Saint Mary's (4/16).
STANFORD-WASHINGTON BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford and Washington continue their three-game Pac-10 series this Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21 (1 pm, 1 pm, PT). Stanford and Washington are currently tied for third place in the Pac-10, 1.5 games behind first place USC (21-16, 7-3 Pac-10) and one game behind second place Arizona State (24-14, 8-5 Pac-10). Washington has won three of its last four conference games after starting 1-2, while the Cardinal has dropped two-of-three after starting 3-1. Stanford had won eight straight games between the clubs before Washington's 3-1 victory in the series opener last night. Last year, the Cardinal swept the Huskies in a three-game series at Sunken Diamond (3/23, 9-3, 3/24, 9-0, 3/25, 13-4). Stanford leads the all-time series, 28-10.
FRIDAY NIGHT REVIEW
at Washington 3, Stanford 1 (April 19, 2002) - Aaron Hathaway and Greg Isaacson bounced back-to-back two-out RBI singles through the infield in the bottom of the seventh inning and Shawn Kohn pitched a complete game six-hitter to lift Washington to a 3-1 upset victory over Stanford. The loss was Stanford's first in 11 series openers this season and also snapped an eight-game win streak against the Huskies dating back to 1999. Stanford reliever Ryan McCally was charged with his first loss of the season after giving up both Washington runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kohn (7-2) struck out just two Cardinal batters but did not issue a walk while pitching his fourth complete game of the season. He retired the first nine batters he faced and nine of the last 10. Chris O'Riordan (2-4, 2B) and Sam Fuld (2-4) had two hits each for the Cardinal, while Hathaway (2-3) was the only Washington player with more than one hit. The game clocked in at just two hours and 17 minutes, the shortest game played by Stanford this season.
