Cardinal Down Saint Mary's 5-0

May 13, 2002

Moraga, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team traveled to Moraga on Saturday (May 11) and beat an under strength Saint Mary's squad 5-0. The movement of the Cardinal off the ball was too much for the Gael's to handle from the start.

The scoring was started by Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) in the 19th minute after approach work from Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) and Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL). Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) made a world class save shortly before Stanford increased their lead to two. Saint Mary's Lucianne Crenshaw cut inside from the left and unleashed a fierce effort that Barnhart tipped around the post.

In the 40th minute Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) got her first goal of the spring with a right foot shot after a move that went the whole length of the field. Katherine Harrington (Fort Worth, TX) won the ball on the left hand side, and played the ball wide to Emilee Shim (Decatur, GA) who wall passed through Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) and then passed the ball into Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) who set up Marquand's shot.

The Cardinal soon added their third goal in the 43rd minute when Ward took a Oliveira cross off her chest in behind the defense for a neat right foot finish into the far left hand corner.

Myers made it 4-0 in the 70th minute on a penalty after she had been scythed down in the penalty area when she looked certain to score. Finally, Katie Wayland (Concord, MA) completed the scoring with a close range effort after Jenna Shuer's (Mountain View, CA) corner was knocked down by Withers.

Stanford's play improved through the afternoon and was helped by the organizational efforts of Natalie Spilger (El Cajon, CA) at the back, good runs out of the back from the Harrington and Alisan Pabon (Dallas, TX), some creative dribbling by Carlson and some tough defending from Anna Hare (Portland, OR).

The Cardinal's next game of the spring will be against a boys Under 15 team this coming Wednesday, May 15 at Maloney Field at 7 p.m. Stanford's last game will be against local rival, and National Champion Santa Clara on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Maloney Field.
