Nicole Barnhart Saves Two Penalties As Stanford Beats Santa Clara 3-0

May 24, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) got a goal and an assist apiece and helped Stanford to their fifth win of the spring season with a 3-0 win over Santa Clara on Thursday night at Maloney Field.

After 11:30 in the game, Ward scored on a 1v1 after Oliveira pushed the ball in behind the Santa Clara back four to put the Cardinal up 1-0. Three minutes later Oliveira finished off the second attempt when Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) had laid the ball back from the end line.

Stanford jumped up 3-0 after 38 minutes into the first half when Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) finished on a full volley off of Ward's cross.

The second half was a little more even. Santa Clara was awarded two penalties, and amazingly both times Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) saved from National Team player Ally Wagner. Both penalties were well struck, but Barnhart was equal to them.

Stanford concludes its spring season at 5-1. The team will reconvene in mid August to go on their preseason tour of Holland, Germany and Belgium.
