Stanford, Calif. - Darren Fernandez scored on a header at 4:53 of overtime to lift the top-ranked Stanford men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over 18th-ranked Oregon State in a Pacific-10 contest on Sunday at Harry Maloney Field.
Johanes Maliza started the winning goal in motion when he received a free kick and passed the ball to Fernandez who fired in a header over several Oregon State defenders and past Beaver goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer.
Both teams had their chances in the 90-minute regulation, including a rocket shot on goal by Fernandez and by James Twellman's shot on goal which went wide in the first half, and a side volley shot by Matt Janusz in the second half. Oregon State also had its chances, but Cardinal goalkeeper Robby Fulton responded by producing his fifth shutout in six starts this year.
The hard-fought battle resulted in 53 fouls, 32 by Oregon State and 21 by Stanford.
Seven yellow cards were handed out, four for OSU and three for Stanford.
"I'm excited and proud for the team," said Cardinal head coach Brett Simon. "We were shorthanded in two physical games, but the guys worked hard this weekend."
Roger Levesque and Todd Dunivant each missed their second straight games due to injury. Levesque, the All-American who is Stanford's top scorer with 22 points, has a knee injury, while Dunivant, a three-year starter, has been bothered by a leg injury.
Stanford's defense recorded his eighth shutout of the season. The defense held Oregon State to only four shots in nearly 95 minutes of play.
Stanford upped its record to 11-1-0 and 2-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference. Oregon State fell to 9-3-0 and 0-2 in the conference.
