Fresno, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford men's soccer team recorded two shots in the final overtime period, but Fresno State held on as the Cardinal and Bulldogs played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Bulldog Stadium in front of 2004 fans on Sunday afternoon. Stanford stands at 11-2-1 overall (2-1-1 Pac-10), while the Bulldogs hold a 3-6-4 mark, 0-2-1 in the conference.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities during the first half, with Stanford's Todd Leber (Tucson, AZ) rocketing a shot off the goalpost late in the half. However, Fresno State would hold tough for a 0-0 halftime score despite being outshot 8-5.
In the second half, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on with five corner kicks. Kupone Low nearly missed a score following a free kick and Ernesto Vega fired a shot late in the half that hit the post, only to be corralled by the Stanford defense.
The two teams ended regulation tied at 0-0 and eventually played to a draw after neither squad could find the net in two overtime sessions. The Cardinal held a 2-0 advantage in shots during the overtime periods, but Fresno State keeper Jeremy Proud came through with some timely saves and finished with four on the afternoon.
Matt Janusz (Littleton, CO) led the Cardinal with four shots in the contest, while James Twellman (Chesterfield, MO) added three. Andrew Terris (Newton, MA) played all 110 minutes in goal for Stanford, recording two saves.
Stanford will next play in Berkeley on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they face Bay Area rival Cal at 2 p.m. on Goldman Field.
