Stanford, Calif. - Ninth-ranked Stanford (15-4-2) earned a 0-0 (10-9 in penalty kicks) win at Maloney Field tonight over No. 16 Portland (13-6-1) in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament. Neither team managed a goal during the 110 minutes of play, despite Stanford having to play a man down for the final 10:16 after a red card was issued to James Twellman.
The Cardinal out-shot the Pilots 12-6 during the match, nine of which came in the second half. With both teams scoreless in regulation, the game proceeded to overtime. Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime, and with 16 seconds to go, Twellman was issued a red card leaving Stanford a man down for the remainder of the match.
Stanford and Portland stayed gridlocked for the second overtime, sending the game into penalty kicks.
Stanford started the shoot-out with Todd Dunivant's shot getting blocked by Pilot keeper Curtis Spiteri, but Cardinal goalie Robby Fulton stopped Portland's third shot to even out the kicks at 2-2. After five shots apiece, the teams then competed with sudden death rules.
After the first shot, Stanford recorded eight straight shots before Roger Levesque's attempt was nabbed by Spiteri. With the game on the line, Fulton recorded his second save in the shoot-out to put the Cardinal back on the mark.
On the twelfth kick for Stanford, Johanes Maliza, who had three shots during the second half, fired his second shoot-out attempt. Spiteri dove for the ball, but it bounced off the post and into the back of the net. The Pilots' Eric Cronkite stepped to the mark and fired, but his shot was snagged by Fulton to give Stanford the 10-9 edge in penalty kicks and advance the Cardinal to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Stanford will host Furman on Sunday, December 1st at 1 p.m. at Maloney Field in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Furman upset Virginia Commonwealth earlier today in Richmond, VA, 4-2 in penalty kicks.
