Stanford, Ca - The ninth-ranked Stanford men's soccer team broke its four-game winless streak with a convincing 2-0 victory over Fresno State in a Pacific-10 Conference game on a cold, rainy Friday night at Harry Maloney Field.
The Cardinal had gone 13 straight periods (including five overtime periods) without scoring a goal, but the drought ended at 19:17 of the first half when Darren Fernandez knocked in a rebound shot past Fresno State goalkeeper Jeremy Proud after Roger Levesque's initial shot was blocked. For Fernandez, it was his seventh goal of the season.
Stanford kept on the offensive in the second half and that produced a goal at 71:35 when Matt Janusz collected his fifth score of the season. Janusz raced up the center of the field and took a long pass from Clayton Peters to beat a Fresno State defender and kicked the ball into the Bulldog net.
Sophomore Robby Fulton collected his seventh shutout of the season with seven saves.
Stanford outshot Fresno State, 16-13, in a game that was played during several downpours of heavy rain.
Stanford now will face the challenge of the UCLA Bruins (11-3-2) on Sunday (Nov. 10) at 3:30 p.m. at Harry Maloney Field. The Bruins, ranked fifth in the nation, are in first place in the Pac-10 with a 6-2-0 record. The Bruins, however, lost a 1-0 double overtime decision at California on Friday.
