Berkeley, Ca - Senior All-American forward Roger Levesque scored a goal and added three assists to lead the top-ranked and unbeaten Stanford men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over the University of Denver on Friday at the adidas Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field.
"This is the best game we have played this year," said Cardinal head coach Bret Simon. "Denver is a quality team and he played with a high quality of focus."
The winning goal took place at 47:09 when Levesque took a pass near the goal, beat his defender, and fired a shot that hit the right post. The ball rebounded to Levesque who then put the ball past Denver goalkeeper Brian Lux. That gave Stanford a 3-0 lead, and then at the 57:29, Stanford increased its lead to 4-0 when crisp passes from Johanes Maliza, Todd Dunivant and Levesque landed at the feet of Matt Janusz. Janusz then fired a shot past the Denver goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
Denver scored two late goals.
Maliza opened the Cardinal scoring at 23:09 when he took a pass from Levesque and fired a shot in the left corner of the net from six yards away.
Mike Wilson scored his team-leading fourth goal of the year at 28:50. Levesque assisted on the goal.
Stanford travels to St. Mary's on Sunday (9/15). Kickoff is 3:00 p.m.
