Stanford, Ca - The top-ranked Stanford men's soccer team exploded for three goals in a ten-minute span of the second half to hand 22nd ranked Santa Clara a 3-0 defeat on Sunday at the Nike Invitational at Harry Maloney Field.
Stanford and Santa Clara were locked in a 0-0 tie, but then the Cardinal took a 1-0 lead at 57:27 when Darren Fernandez received a cross pass from James Twellman and fired the ball past Bronco goalkeeper Steve Cronin.
Then, Stanford exploded for another goal at 59:06 when Roger Levesque bounced a shot off the goalkeeper and into the net for a 2-0 lead. Eight minutes later at 67:54, Stanford hit paydirt again when Twellman scored his fourth goal of the season on a pass from Levesque.
The game was physical throughout as both teams were handed a total of four yellow cards (3 for Santa Clara, 1 for Stanford) and the Broncos were issued a red card at 79:46.
Sophomore goalkeeper Robby Fulton earned his third shutout victory of the year for Stanford. Stanford upped its season record to 8-1-0 while the Broncos fell to 4-3-0. It was Santa Clara's first shutout loss of the year.
Thursday (Oct. 3), Stanford hosts San Jose State at 7:30 p.m. at Harry Maloney Field.
In the first game on Sunday, California claimed the championship trophy of the Nike Invitational with a 2-0 victory over Tulsa. The Golden Bears were awarded the victory by winning both its games, a 2-1 decision over Santa Clara last thursday, and the 2-0 decision over Tulsa on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, Cal got on the scoreboard at 48:14 when Garrett Terracciano headed the ball past Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Brent Salter. The goal was setup by an assist from James Dabney. Cal then iced the game at 88:14 when Mike Munoz took a pass from Calen Carr and drifted a shot past the Tulsa goalkeeper.
California now is 6-2-1 while Tulsa fell to 6-3-0.
