No. 7 Stanford Wins Maui Invitational

Maui, Hawai'i - Coming off last season's NCAA Super Six appearance, the seventh-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team opened its 2003 season by winning all events and recording a 196.050 team score en route to capturing the Maui Invitational on Friday night. Junior Lise L?veill? (Burnby, B.C.) led the Cardinal by winning the all-around competition with a 39.400, edging teammate Natalie Foley (Colorado Springs, CO) who finished second with a 39.350.

Arizona State finished second in the team scoring with a 194.200, followed by New Hampshire (193.325) and San Jose State (189.825).

"This was a great way to start our season," said second-year head coach Kristen Smyth. "We hit 21 of 24 routines, just outstanding performances all around. It was a good competition and I thought we looked fantastic for our first meet of the year."

Freshman Glyn Sweets (Reston, VA) won the vault in her first collegiate meet, posting a score of 9.875. L?veill? followed with a 9.825 to place second on the event.

Stanford had two places winners in the top-three of the uneven bars. Junior Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, WA) won the bars with a 9.900, while junior teammate Lindsay Wing (Cypress, TX) placed third with a 9.800.

The Cardinal had their best showing on the balance team, recording team score of 49.525. L?veill? (9.950), Foley (9.925) and Wing (9.925) swept the top-three places for Stanford. Sophomore Marla Ranieri (Kinnelon, NJ) posted a 9.875, while juniors Kendall Beck (San Antonio, TX) and Fluhrer each recorded a 9.850.

Stanford was also successful on the floor exercise, capturing the top-three places. Foley won the event with a 9.900 in her first collegiate meet, followed by L?veill? (9.875), Fluhrer (9.850) and Wing with a 9.825.

"Lise led us with her win in the all-around," commented Smyth. "I thought the freshmen did very well and Natalie is just spectacular to watch."

The Cardinal will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they travel to Denver, Colo. Stanford will take on the University of Denver at 6 p.m.
