Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a 308 in the final round of the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. to finish 12th overall with an 889. UCLA shot an 855 to take top honors with a 12 stroke win over runner-up UC Irvine (862). Rounding out the top five were UTEP (868), Oregon (869) and Pacific (292).
Cardinal Kevin Blue shot a 77 in the final round and tied for 20th individually with a 219 to lead Stanford. Senior George Downing turned n a 222 (75-72-75) for the tourney and tied for 30th while teammate Blake Mastalir tied for 35th, just one stroke back, with a 223 (73-72-78). Stanford's Jim Seki tied for 52nd wtiha 227 and Ron Won tied for 68th.
UCLA's Steve Conway took individual medalist honors, firing a two-under par 208 over three rounds. Pacific's Matt Hansen was second (209) while UTEP's Dan Swanson finished third (210). Isaac Weintraub (SJSU), Brendan Steele (UC-Riverside) and Jeff Coburn (UC Irvine) tied for fourth with a 211.
