Lincoln, Neb. - In the closest session of the day, the Stanford women's gymnastics team came within 0.425 of a point from advancing to the NCAA Super Six on Thursday night in the second session of the 2003 NCAA Championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. Host Nebraska won the meet with a 197.325, followed by Utah (196.850), Georgia (196.625), Florida (196.325), Stanford (196.200) and Auburn (193.525).
The top three teams advance to the Super Six and will be joined by UCLA, Alabama and Michgan from the first session tomorrow night at the Devaney Center.
Stanford started the competition as it had all season, on vault. Junior Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, WA) started the meet for the Cardinal, posting a 9.725. Freshmen Glyn Sweets (Reston, VA) and Natalie Foley (Englewood, CO) led Stanford with 9.875 vaults. Junior Kendall Beck (San Antonio, TX) added a 9.850, while Lise L?veill? (Burnaby, BC) recorded a 9.825. Foley and Sweets each tied for sixth place with their score.
Following a second rotation bye, Stanford was tied for third with Georgia (49.150) after the first event. Nebraska held the lead with a 49.500 while Utah scored a 49.350 on vault to stand in second.
Senior Alissa Cooper (Silver Spring, MD) recorded a 9.600 to start the Cardinal on bars. L?veill? followed with a 9.800 and following a Sweets' fall, Lindsay Wing (Cypress, TX) and Foley each got 9.850 scores. Fluhrer capped off the event with a team-high 9.875 performance, which place her tied for fifth.
Stanford moved to beam, where they were in fourth place after two events. The Cardinal responded with their highest event total thus far in the meet, a 49.200 on beam. Wing turned in a 9.900, the highest score for Stanford on the event and tied the competition in the session for second place. Sweets and Foley both followed with 9.875 and 9.850 marks, respectively.
The Cardinal finished the meet on floor where Fluhrer led the team with a 9.850. Wing and Foley each added a 9.800. Stanford finished with a 48.875 on the event to finish with a 196.200 team total.
Foley finished fourth in the all-around with a 39.375.
