The 6th Annual Stanford Football Legends Reunion was a great success. Over 150 former players were in attendance at the Saturday scrimmage and barbecue. Although there were a few raindrops falling from the skies as former Stanford players observed practice from the sidelines, all braved the elements and seemed to thoroughly enjoy being back on the football field. The current Stanford Football team looked sharp and are ready to rebound from their 2-9 season last year. Stanford head Coach Buddy Teevens addressed the reunion attendees for a half an hour after practice and gave everyone an update and prospectus on the 2003 Stanford Football season. Everyone enjoyed the great food and the frosty-cold ones that flowed at the barbecue.
The day before the football practice and barbecue, former players dug deep into the Tiger Balm and began a WWF match (aka basketball) on the bouncing court of Maples Pavilion. There seemed to be a lot of shooting, but not much scoring. Later that night, approximately 50+ former players gathered at the Dutch Goose for a few sodas to hear about how good everyone was when they played on The Farm. There were 50+ All-Americans that night.
Also included in this year's reunion was a gathering of over 50 former Stanford players who played in the late 1950's and 1960's and their close family and friends. They met at Chuck Taylor Grove to memorialize teammates and coaches who had passed and who meant so much to them during their years together at Stanford and beyond. Those playersremembered in the celebration were Frederick Allen, Robert Atkinson, Jerry Beatie, John Bessy, David Bramble, John Chapple, Richard Childs, John Cole, Jack Curtice, Bill Donahue, Earl Drake, Mal Edwards, Ron Fernandes, Peter Fitzgerald, Connie Jarvis, Pete Kmetovic, James Kroeter, John Ward Macdonald, Joseph McAnerney, Jeri McMillan, Herm Meister, Charles Morehouse, Robert Muller, Allen Napoleon, John Power, Frank "Doug" Pursell, Phil Ritzau, Noel Robinson, Larry Royse, Joe Ruetz, Neal Scheidel, Philip Toorvald, Chuck Taylor, Gary VanGalder, Ronald Waldrum, Jay Ward and Don Watson. Linda Player '59, sister of Steve Player '63 who was present at the event, and Evelyn Dees were also remembered. Linda Player was one of the early Stanford Pom Pom girls. Don Peter '60 was very instrumental in bringing the group together. He collected hundreds of photos and memoirs from the Stanford teams of the 1950's and 1960's and displayed them for all to see. Former players were amazed by Don's exhibit of Stanford Football history.
