Stanford has clinched its first outright Pac-10 title since 1999 (Stanford shared the Pac-10 crown with Arizona State and UCLA in 2000) by finishing with an 18-6 conference record after winning eight of its last nine conference games and posting an 11-1 road record in Pac-10 play ... Stanford has won 19 conference championships (17 Pac-10, includes Southern Division and shared titles) in school history and has finished either first or second in the conference 21 times in the last 23 years ... at Stanford 10, Saint Mary's 1 (May 13, 2003)
Ryan Garko (2-2, 2B, 4 RBI) drove in four runs to raise his team-leading total and Mark Jecmen (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory to lead Stanford to a 10-1 victory over Saint Mary's in a non-conference game. Jecmen scattered a run and three hits with four strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Stanford scored five times in its first two turns at the plate and never trailed in the contest. The victory was Stanford's 15th in a row over the Gaels dating back to 1994.
Brian Hall (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Sam Fuld (2-4, 2B, RBI) also had multiple-hit games for the Cardinal. Stanford stroked six doubles to tie a season high as Jed Lowrie, Chris Carter and Donny Lucy all added two-baggers.
at Stanford 9, UCLA 1 (May 16, 2003)
John Hudgins tossed his Pac-10 leading fifth complete game of the season, allowing just one run and four hits with 10 strikeouts, to lead Stanford to a convincing 9-1 victory over UCLA in the opener of a three-game series. Jonny Ash (3-5) tied a career-high with three hits, while Carlos Quentin (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) drove in three runs to lead a Cardinal offense that pounded out 15 hits with all nine starters picking up at least one hit.
Sam Fuld (2-4, RBI), John Mayberry, Jr. (2-4, 2 2B) and Ryan Garko (2-5, RBI) added two hits each for the Cardinal, while Chris Carter hit a home run.
UCLA starter Casey Janssen suffered the loss, allowing six runs and a career-high 11 hits over the first 3.2 innings. UCLA reliever Mike Kunes finished the game with 4.1 innings of work, limiting the Cardinal to three runs and four hits.
UCLA 9, at Stanford 5 -- 12 inn. (May 17, 2003)
Stanford picked up a share of its first Pac-10 title since 2000 despite a 9-5 loss in 12 innings to UCLA. The Bruins' Brett McMillan hit his first career grandslam with one out in the top of the 12th inning on a 1-2 pitch from Stanford reliever Matt Manship to snap a 5-5 tie. Stanford had wins streaks of nine games overall and seven Pac-10 contests snapped.
All four UCLA runs in the top of the 12th inning were unearned as the Cardinal committed its only two errors of the game to aid the Bruins' cause.
Chris Cordeiro (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season with 2.2 hitless innings of relief.
Manship (2-4) suffered the loss and missed an opportunity to record his eighth save of the season when he allowed the tying run to score in the top of the ninth inning after coming into the game with one out, a 5-3 lead and a runner on first base. Manship gave up four hits and five runs but only the run charged to him in the ninth inning was earned.
Brandon Averill (3-4, 2B) had three hits for the Bruins, while Wes Whisler was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Brian Hall (3-6, 3B, 2 RBI) had three of Stanford's nine hits, while Sam Fuld (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI) also had a multiple-hit game. Jed Lowrie had his career-high nine-game hit streak snapped by going 0-for-5.
at Stanford 9, UCLA 8 -- 10 inn. (May 18, 2003)
Stanford clinched the outright Pac-10 regular season championship when Donny Lucy led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a solo homer off the scoreboard beyond the leftcenter field fence to lift the Cardinal to a thrilling 9-8 victory in 10 innings over UCLA in Stanford's final conference game of the season. Lucy's homer came on an 0-2 offering from losing pitcher Mike Castillo (1-1) and capped his 3-for-5 (HR, RBI) afternoon. Stanford's conference title is the 19th in school history (17th Pac-10) and first since the Cardinal shared the 2000 Pac-10 championship with Arizona State and UCLA in 2000. Stanford's last outright Pac-10 title came in 1999.
The game featured eight homers with the Cardinal tying a season-high with five and UCLA going deep three times. Stanford's Danny Putnam (3-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI) hit a pair of homers for the third time this season. Lucy, Chris Carter and Carlos Quentin also homered for the Cardinal with Quentin extending his hit streak to 10 games and hitting safely for the 38th time in his last 40 games. Brian Hall (3-5, 2B, SB) had three hits for his second straight game and Sam Fuld (2-4, 3B) extended his hit streak to 11 games.
UCLA's Wes Whisler (3-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI) blasted a pair of homers, while Billy Susdorf (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) also cleared the fences. Three other UCLA players - Brandon Averill (2-5, 3B, RBI), Ryan McCarthy (2-5, RBI) and Brett McMillan (2-5, 2B) - had a pair of hits each.
Ryan McCally (5-2) earned the victory by pitching 4.0 scoreless innings of two-hit relief after coming into the game with no outs in the top of the seventh inning.
NOTEBOOK STANFORD-CAL POLY SERIES HISTORY
Stanford leads the all-time series, 40-5 (since 1999). Last year, the Cardinal swept a three-game set at Sunken Diamond (March 1-3; W, 8-6; W, 18-5; W, 11-3). Stanford's win streak over the Broncos extends back one more game to their second meeting the previous season (5/8/01) when the Cardinal pulled out an 11-10 win at Sunken Diamond. Cal Poly's last victory in the series came in the 2001 season-opener for both teams when the Mustangs surprised the Cardinal in San Luis Obispo, 6-5 in 12 innings.
STANFORD WINS OUTRIGHT PAC-10 TITLE, WRAPS UP NCAA AUTOMATIC BERTH
Stanford took two-of-three games from UCLA last Friday-Sunday to win the outright Pac-10 title for the first time since 1999 (Stanford shared the Pac-10 crown with Arizona State and UCLA in 2000) and wrap up the Pac-10's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Stanford, which finished with an 18-6 league mark, has now won 19 conference championships in school history, including 17 Pac-10 crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford had finished second in the conference behind two-time defending league champion USC in 2001 and 2002 and has been among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division) for 10 straight seasons and 21 times in the last 23 years.
STANFORD HAS WON 10 OF 11 GAMES OVERALL AND 11 OF LAST 12 SERIES
Stanford heads into its final regular season series versus Cal Poly this Friday-Sunday with 10 wins in its last 11 games and has also won 11 of its last 12 series, as well as 45 of its past 52. Stanford had posted a season-long nine-game win streak and had won seven straight Pac-10 games (both 5/3 - 5/16) before UCLA stopped the Cardinal, 9-5 in 12 innings, on May 17. Stanford had also won 15 straight Pac-10 home series, as well as eight consecutive overall and eight in a row in Pac-10 play before Arizona won two-of-three at Sunken Diamond (4/25 - 4/27).
STANFORD WINS FINAL 14 REGULAR SEASON ROAD GAMES
Stanford finished its regular season road schedule by winning its final 14 road games, punctuating the streak with a three-game sweep at California (5/9 - 5/11). Stanford, which last lost a road game at Arizona State on March 22 (7-6, 11 inn.), started the streak with victories in the final two games of its series versus the Sun Devils (3/23 - 3/24) and continued the run with a series sweep at Washington State (4/4 - 4/7), as well as victories at Santa Clara (4/8) and Sacramento State (4/22) before sweeping USC (5/3 - 5/4), winning at San Jose State (5/6) and sweeping at California (5/9 - 5/11). Stanford won 11 of its 12 Pac-10 road games in 2003, sweeping its final three conference road series, and was 17-5 in 22 road games overall.
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
For the third consecutive season, the Cardinal struggled in the second half of April before playing well in May. In the last three years, Stanford posted a combined record of just 11-12 in the second half of April before going 34-8 in May. This year, the team finished at 3-5 after the tax deadline and is 10-1 in its first 11 games of May.
Carlos Quentin A CANDIDATE FOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Carlos Quentin has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious 2003 Golden Spikes Award and one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Smith Award. Quentin becomes the 10th finalist from Stanford in the 26-year history of the Golden Spikes Award honoring the top amateur baseball player in the country. This year's winner will be announced on various regional cable networks on Tuesday, July 15, the same day as the 2003 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Rotary Smith Award will be announced on June 26. Quentin leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-10 with a .393 batting average in an attempt to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 since David McCarty hit .420 in 1991. In addition, Quentin leads the Cardinal in hits (81, #3T Pac-10), doubles (23, #2T Pac-10), walks (32, #6T Pac-10), hit-by-pitches (11, #4T Pac-10), on-base percentage (.492, #4T Pac-10) and extra-base hits (32, co-leader with Ryan Garko). He began the stretch with a two-month career-high 26-game hit streak (2/22, Game 1 - 4/22, .495, 51-103, 18 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 30 RBI, 7 SB).
Ryan Garko NAMED JOHNNY BENCH AWARD SEMIFINALIST
Ryan Garko was named one of 10 national semifinalists for the 2003 Johnny Bench Award given annually to the nation's top catcher. Garko is having a monster season, leading the team in homers (14, #6T Pac-10), RBI (74, #2 Pac-10, #7 NCAA), total bases (138, #4 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.687, #5 Pac-10), multiple-hit games (24), multiple-RBI games (22), sacrifice flies (6) and extra-base hits (32, co-leader with Carlos Quentin). Garko also ranks second on the club in batting average (.388, #6 Pac-10), on-base percentage (.453), hit-by-pitches (9, #10T Pac-10) and putouts (321, #9 Pac-10), as well as tied for second in hits (78, #5T Pac-10) . Garko's 74 RBI rank him 10th on Stanford's all-time single-season list, while he needs three more homers to enter the school's single-season list. He has more homers (14) than strikeouts (11) and has not struck out in his last 23 games (80 official at bats) with his last strikeout coming at Washington State (4/5). With just 11 strikeouts in 201 official at bats he averages just one strikeout every 18.3 official at bats. He has hit safely in 25 of his last 30 games (3/24 - 5/18) with a team-high .463 batting average (50-108), 12 doubles, 10 homers, 49 RBI during the stretch, while also posting a .852 slugging percentage and a .531 on-base percentage. Garko hit 10 homers and drove in a league-best 39 runs in 24 Pac-10 games (23 starts). Garko also reached a career milestone when he became the first player on this year's team to play in his 200th career game versus UCLA (5/16).
Mark Romanczuk SHARES PAC-10 WIN LEAD WITH PERFECT 9-0 MARK
Mark Romanczuk shares the Pac-10 in victories with a perfect 9-0 record and has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week three times (4/1, 4/21, 5/5). Romanczuk, who came out of the game with a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning before receiving a no-decision in his most recent start versus UCLA (5/17), has recorded a 3.70 ERA and added two saves with 61 strikeouts in 82.2 innings (#8) and has two complete games. He also leads the conference in opponents' batting average (.225). Romanczuk received Stanford's first invitation to the 2003 USA National Baseball Trials -- to be held in Tucson, Arizona from June 21-27.
John Hudgins LEADS PAC-10 IN FIVE CATEGORIES
John Hudgins (8-3, 3.30) leads the Pac-10 five categories -- innings pitched (117.1), strikeouts (108), strikeouts looking (34), complete games (5) and starts (16). He has four complete games in his last seven outings and has lasted at least 6.0 innings 14 of his 16 starts and has also gone 7.0 or more innings 10 times. His complete games have been versus California (3/7), at Washington State (4/4), versus Oregon State (4/17), versus Arizona (4/25) and versus UCLA (5/17). Hudgins has struck out 10 or more batters in a game four times this season and is the only Stanford pitcher to accomplish the feat. He struck out a career-high 11 in 8.0 scoreless two-hit innings in a 9-1 win over Sacramento State (4/11). He also carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 4-1 win versus Fresno State (2/14) and earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors (2/11) after holding Florida State (2/7) to just one run and six hits with 10 strikeouts over the first 9.0 innings of a game Stanford eventually won, 2-1 in 12 innings. An economics major, he has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team for the first time in his career with a 3.29 cumulative GPA.
Matt Manship ONE SAVE BEHIND CONFERENCE LEADERS WITH SEVEN
Matt Manship (2-4, 3.40, 7 SV, 47.2 IP, 41 SO) has saved seven games and is just one behind a trio of players with eight each. The seven saves also ties Manship for ninth on Stanford's single-season save list. He picked up his last two saves in a three-game series at California, recording the final out in a 9-8 win in the series opener (5/9) and pitching a scoreless ninth inning in a 6-4 victory in the second game of the series (5/10). Manship has made 18 of his 19 appearances out of the bullpen and also picked up a victory in his only start of the season at USC (5/4 - Game 2) with a career-high 7.2 innings of work.
Sam Fuld ON CAREER BATTING AVERAGE, HITS, DOUBLES AND TRIPLES LISTS
Sam Fuld is among Stanford's all-time leaders in batting average (.356, #4T), hits (269, #9T), doubles (49, #10T) and triples (14, #10T). Fuld has a current 11-game hit streak (5/3 - 5/18, .417, 20-48, 3 2B, 3 3B, 8 RBI) that has boosted his season average 27 points to its current .331, the highest it has been since April 18. Fuld also has eight triples this season and is making a run at Stanford's all-time single-season record of 10 set by Jack Shepard in 1953.
Danny Putnam PLAYING STRONG SUPPORTING ROLE
Danny Putnam has been one of Stanford's offensive leaders all season. Putnam currently ranks second on the club in home runs (11, #10T Pac-10), as well as third in batting average (.355), RBI (43), slugging percentage (.615), total bases (104) and on-base percentage (.431). Putnam has homered twice in a game three times this season, most recently with a pair of long balls in Stanford's 9-8 win in 10 innings over UCLA (5/18).
HALL GETS HOT WITH THREE STRAIGHT THREE-HIT GAMES
Brian Hall posted three consecutive three-hit games in his three starts last week, raising his average 22 points to .297 after going 9-for-16 (.562) with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and a stolen base.

Donny Lucy has been Stanford's top pinch-hitter this season. Lucy is hitting an amazing .778 (7-9) when called on in a pinch-hitting role this season.
CARDINAL TWO VICTORIES FROM EXTENDING 40-WIN SEASONS STRING TO NINE
Stanford is two victories from extending its string of consecutive 40-win seasons to nine. Last year, the Cardinal picked up its eighth straight 40-win campaign by finishing with a 47-18 overall mark. The last time Stanford didn't win 40 games was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993. Stanford has also assured itself of another winning season in 2003. The Cardinal has now been above .500 in 38 of the last 39 and 55 of the last 57 campaigns.

STANFORD PLAYERS IN PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL
Stanford has had 61 former players reach the Major Leagues, most recently with the debuts of Jody Gerut (OF, Cleveland Indians) and Jason Young (RHP, Colorado Rockies) in 2003. Eight former Stanford players have put on a Major League Baseball uniform during the 2003 campaign. In addition to Gerut and Young, former Stanford players Jeff Austin (RHP, Cincinnati Reds), Jeffrey Hammonds (OF, Milwaukee Brewers), Rick Helling (RHP, Baltimore Orioles), Jason Middlebrook (RHP, New York Mets), Mike Mussina (RHP, New York Yankees) and Justin Wayne (RHP, Florida Marlins). Bob Boone (Manager, Cincinnati Reds) and Ruben Amaro, Jr. (Assistant GM, Philadelphia Phillies) are also currently involved with Major League Baseball in 2002. A total of 26 former players have participated in professional baseball this season.
CARDINAL, WHITE AND BLUE
Stanford emerged on top of a recent USA National Team player study by produced 20 Team USA players that have played in 28 seasons over the last 18 years, more than any other collegiate program in the nation in both categories. Stanford is also tops in the nation with at least one player on the Team USA roster for 16 consecutive years. Four current Stanford players have participated with Team USA -- Tim Cunningham (2001), Sam Fuld (2001, '02), Ryan Garko (2001, '02), Carlos Quentin (2001, '02). Current freshman left-handed pitcher Mark Romanczuk has been invited to the 2003 USA National Team Trials. Also, with the selection of Quentin as one of five finalists for the 2003 Golden Spikes Award, Stanford equaled Miami for the most finalists in the history of the award with 10. No Stanford player has ever won the honor.
2003 NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION
The 16 regional sites for the 2003 NCAA Division I Baseball Championships will be announced this Sunday, May 25. The entire 64-team field will be introduced live on ESPN on Monday, May 26 (9:30 am, PT). The NCAA Regionals will be scheduled at the 16 regional sites from Friday, May 30 - Sunday, June 1. The winners of the 16 NCAA Regionals will be paired off into eight Super Regionals (best two-of-three series) at eight host sites to be announced on Monday, June 2. The winners of the eight NCAA Super Regionals will advance to the 57th College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska (Friday, June 13 - Monday, June 23). Stanford has served as a host site for 11 NCAA Regionals (1983, '85, '87, '90, '96, '97, '98, '99, 2000, '01, '02), including seven in a row, and four consecutive NCAA Super Regionals (1999, 2000, '01, '02). The Cardinal has assured itself of its 24th NCAA Tournament berth by earning the Pac-10's automatic berth in 2003. Stanford has advanced to the College World Series 14 times (1953, '67, '82, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01, '02), including a current school record four in a row.

Stanford's current season batting average stands at .317 (#3 Pac-10), which would rank fourth on Stanford's all-time list for a single-season. Carlos Quentin and Ryan Garko are both having huge seasons. Quentin leads the club in batting average (.393, #3 Pac-10), hits (81, #3T Pac-10), doubles (23, #2T Pac-10), walks (32, #6T Pac-10), hit-by-pitches (11, #4T Pac-10), on-base percentage (.492, #4 Pac-10) and extra-base hits (32, co-leader with Garko). Garko has team-highs in home runs (14, #6T Pac-10), RBI (74, #2 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.687, #5 Pac-10), total bases (138, #4 Pac-10), multiple-hit games (24), multiple-RBI games (22), sacrifice flies (6) and extra-base hits (32, co-leader with Quentin). Sam Fuld paces the Cardinal in at bats (236, #2 Pac-10), runs scored (63, #4 Pac-10) and triples (8, #2T Pac-10). Brian Hall has a team-high 14 stolen bases (#5T Pac-10), while Tobin Swope paces the squad with eight sacrifice bunts (#3 Pac-10). Fuld, Garko and Swope have each played in all 53 games, while Fuld and Swope have started all 53. Garko (.388), Danny Putnam (.355), Fuld (.331), John Mayberry, Jr. (.308) and Jed Lowrie (.305) join Quentin above the .300 mark.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.14 (#2 Pac-10) and the Cardinal has held its opponents to a Pac-10 low .247 batting average. John Hudgins (8-3, 3.30) is the Pac-10's leader in five categories -- innings pitched (117.1), strikeouts (108), strikeouts looking (34), starts (16) and complete games (5). Hudgins also has the team's lowest ERA (#3 Pac-10) among regulars. Mark Romanczuk (9-0, 3.70, 2 SV, 82.2 IP, 61 SO) shares the Pac-10 victory lead with nine wins and paces the Pac-10 in opponents' batting average (.225). Romanczuk also has two complete games and has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week three times (4/1, 4/20, 5/5). Tim Cunningham (2-3, 5.70, 36.1 IP, 28 SO) has returned as the team's Sunday starter in each of its last two series. Ryan McCally (5-2, 5.27, 2 SV, 71.2 IP, 42 SO) spent most of the season as a starter and ranks tied for second on the club with Romanczuk with 11 starts (including one complete game) but has been used primarily out of the bullpen recently. Matt Manship (2-4, 3.40, 7 SV, 47.2 IP, 41 SO) leads the club and ranks tied for ninth on Stanford's single-season list with seven saves, just one off the Pac-10 leaders. Manship also picked up a win in his first and only collegiate start at USC (5/4). David O'Hagan (6-1, 5.53, 3 SV, 40.2 IP, 37 SO) has won six games out of the bullpen and saved three games. Kodiak Quick (2-0, 4.83, 3 SV, 31.2 IP, 32 SO) and Jonny Dyer (2-1, 3.38, 16.0 IP, 9 SO) have both won a pair of games with Quick also recording three saves. Drew Ehrlich (1-0, 4.19, 19.1 IP, 18 SO) and Mark Jecmen (1-0, 4.32, 8.1 IP, 7 SO) have the team's other two wins. Stanford has already posted 17 saves, second in the conference and within six of the school record of 23 set in 2001.
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford has a .970 fielding percentage (#3 Pac-10) and has been errorless 17 times this season, most recently when the Cardinal was errorless for the first time in its last eight games versus UCLA (5/18). John Mayberry, Jr. leads the club and ranks fourth in the Pac-10 with 419 putouts, while Tobin Swope has a team-high 156 assists (#6 Pac-10). Mayberry's 16 putouts at Washington State (4/5), as well as eight assists by Swope at USC (5/4 - Game 2) are single-game team highs. Stanford has turned a season-high three double plays twice versus Nevada (2/17) and at USC (5/3).
STANFORD HEAD COACH Mark Marquess
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 27th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2003 with an overall record of 1131-548-5 (.673) and a 462-294 (.611) mark in Pac-10 action. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two CWS titles and a pair of runner-up showings, 12 College World Series appearances, 12 NCAA Regional titles and four NCAA Super Regional championships. The Cardinal also just won its 11th Pac-10 championship (includes Southern Division and shared titles) and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 21st time in 27 years under Marquess in 2003. Marquess began the 2003 season ranked 10th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches. Marquess moved into sole possession of 20th place on the all-time victory list with his 1101st career victory at Texas (2/22/03 - Game 1). Recent milestone victories were his 1100th career win versus Nevada (2/17/03) and his 1000th against Florida State (2/9/01). He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions. The Cardinal has assured itself of its 26th winning campaign in 27 seasons under his leadership this year and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 20 times in the last 22 years. Stanford has had 104 professional baseball draft picks in the past 18 seasons, including 13 first round selections in the last 16 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 CWS squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 27th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his fourth season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis is in his fourth season as Stanford's pitching coach, while Dave Nakama is in his fourth year overall as a Stanford assistant coach.
