Game 2 - Stanford 4, at Long Beach State 2
STANFORD
Stanford has now extended its school record string of consecutive College World Series trips to five. The Cardinal has won nine consecutive games as well as nine straight home games, and 18 of its last 19 games overall. Stanford is a perfect 5-0 in postseason play, marking the second straight year the Cardinal has posted a perfect 5-0 record in Regional and Super Regional games. Stanford is 26-5 in Regional and Super Regional games since the new Super Regional format began in 1999. Stanford head coach Mark Marquess picked up his 100th career postseason victory (100-43). Stanford has won four straight postseason games versus Long Beach State, including a pair of victories in last year's Regional and two in this year's Super Regional, all at Stanford. The Cardinal is now 10-2 in five Super Regional appearances and 108-51 all-time in NCAA postseason play. Danny Putnam's game-winning, two-RBI single gave him 12 RBI for the postseason to lead the Cardinal. The sophomore left fielder had five RBI in the Super Regional, going 4-for-8 with a homerun and a double in the series. Carlos Quentin went 4-for-5 with an RBI, giving him 11 hits in 20 plate appearances during the 2003 postseason -- a .550 average. Mark Romanczuk, the Pac-10 win leader, improved to 12-0 this season in his attempt to become only the second Stanford pitcher to ever have an unbeaten record with more than eight decisions. Sandy Vance was the only other Stanford pitcher to accomplish the feat when he went 11-0 in 1967. Matt Manship recorded his ninth save of the season by recording the final two outs. Manship's nine saves rank tied for fourth on Stanford's single-season list
LONG BEACH STATE
Jered Weaver tied the Long Beach State record for strikeouts in a single season with 144. He now shares the mark with Scott Rivette, who set it in 1995. Todd Jennings extended his hitting streak to 28 games, setting a new Long Beach State school record. The previous mark of 27 was set by Todd Guggliana in 1989. The Dirtbags are now 1-5 all-time against Stanford and are 6-7 in games played in Palo Alto. The Cardinal has eliminated the Dirtbags from postseason play in each of the last two years.
