Los Angeles, Ca - Tony Azevedo and Thomas Hopkins combined for nine goals as the second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team downed ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Loyola Marymount jumped to a 1-0 lead with 5:57 in the first period when Endre Rex-Kiss scored on an extra-man goal. Twenty-four seconds later, Hopkins tied the score at 1-1. The Cardinal took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Mike Derse with just 40 seconds remaining in the first period.
LMU's Tamas Szego recorded an extra man goal at the 4:16 mark of the second period, but Stanford took a 5-2 lead on goals by Azevedo and J.J. Garton.
Stanford scored in the third period on Hopkins' second and third goals of the day, but was quickly answered by LMU's Sean Wimer and Szego which kept the Lions within three goals at 7-4.
Stanford went on a 4-0 run in the fourth quarter on goals by Azevedo and Hopkins.
The win upped Stanford's season record to 9-3 while Loyola Marymount fell to 9-9.
Stanford returns home on Oct. 18 against UC Santa Barbara (noon) and Oct. 19 against UC Davis (noon).
