STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's soccer team was shut out by Fresno State, 1-0, at Maloney Field Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Cardinal falls to 2-12-2 overall and 0-7-0 in Pac-10 play. The Bulldogs improve to 5-10-0 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.
Fresno State scored the game's lone goal in the 38th minute when senior midfielder Ernie Vega found the back of the net with an unassisted strike.
Stanford had a few opportunities to score in the first half, but couldn't sneak a shot past Fresno State goalkeeper Eric Kronberg. The Cardinal tallied six shots in the opening period with three of them coming on goal. Darren Fernandez recorded two shots, both of them on goal, while Todd Leber, Michael Brown, Abe Geiger, and Mike Wilson also attempted shots.
Down 1-0 at the break, the Cardinal defense clamped down in the second half, limiting the Bulldogs to four shots, with only two of them being on goal. Offensively, the Cardinal turned up the pressure, looking for the equalizer. Stanford attempted seven shots in the second half but were unable to even up the score. Junior Matt Janusz and freshman Marcus Ryan provided the Cardinal with a spark off the bench combining for five shot attempts in the second half.
"In the second half, the guys pushed themselves harder, and they didn't give up," said Stanford Head Coach Bret Simon. "On a hot day like today, I think it's a positive sign that they came out and gave that type of effort."
Junior goalkeeper Robby Fulton took the loss, despite playing well in goal. Fulton recorded three saves on the day, giving him 53 on the season.
The Cardinal will regroup before hitting the road to play at Washington on October 31, and at Oregon State on November 2.
