Box Score

Providence, RI - No. 19 Stanford fell to host Brown, 2-1, in a first round game at the sixth annual Adidas-Brown Classic on Friday. Stanford led 1-0 on a goal early in the second half by James Twellman before Brown answered with a pair of second half goals in front of a sell-out crowd at Stevenson Field. The Cardinal fell to 1-2 on the season, while Brown won its season-opener.

Stanford got on the board first early in the second half when junior James Twellman knocked in a corner kick taken by freshman Galen Thompson. The Bears quickly responded less than nine minutes later to tie the game 1-1 when Brown senior captain Adom Crew dribbled into the box and junior Marcos Romaneiro chipped in the loose ball for the Bears first goal of the season.

Brown recorded the game-winning goal at the 69:16 mark when freshman Matt Britner headed in a corner kick taken by Romaneiro. The goal was Britner's first collegiate score and Romaneiro's third point of the night.

Senior Edward Thurston came up big for Brown as he helped keep Stanford out of its zone the rest of the way. Junior goalkeeper Chris Gomez ended the game with four saves, including a key stop of a Stanford breakaway with less than a minute left to play.

"This was a game that could have gone either way," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon. "Brown is a very athletic team and played behind a great crowd that gave them energy. We have to regroup and get ready for Yale."

Brown held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots over the Cardinal, while Stanford led 9-5 in penalty kicks.

Cardinal goalkeeper Robby Fulton (1-2) recorded six saves, while Brown goalkeeper Chris Gomez had four.

Stanford will face Yale on Sunday at 11:00 a.m, while Brown continues action versus Wisconsin-Madison at 1:30 p.m. in the final day of the Adidas-Brown Classic.
