Providence, Rhode Island - No. 19 Stanford (1-3) scored first for the second consecutive game but was unable to hold the early advantage in a 2-1 loss to Yale (1-1) in its second and final game of the adidas-Brown Classic at Edwards Stadium on Sunday. Yale's Andrew Dealy converted a penalty kick with under four minutes remaining in regulation at 86:46 to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Bulldogs to their first victory of the season. Stanford lost its third straight game and its 1-3 record is its worst after four games since the Cardinal also started with a 1-3-0 mark in 1994.
Matt Janusz gave the Cardinal its early 1-0 lead and scored his first goal of the season when he set up in the box by Sean Whalen's cross at 14:22. Janusz increased his lead as Stanford's all-time leader in both goals (15) and points (38).
Alex Munns tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes after Janusz' goal when he scored after a free kick on an assist from Lindsey Williams at 18:47. Neither team would score again until Dealy converted his penalty kick after Williams was taken down in the box.
"We had a couple of chances to score after the penalty kick and played much better in the second half," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon.
Yale held an 18-8 advantage in shots and led the Cardinal by a 6-1 margin in penalty corners.Yale goalkeeper Matt Aleksinas (1-1) earned his first victory of the season without recording a save, while Stanford's Andrew Kartunen (0-1) was hit with the loss in his first action with Stanford. Kartunen recorded a pair of second half saves after entering the game at halftime. Robby Fulton played the first half for Stanford, picking up three saves.
Yale's Jay Alberts took a game-high four shots and received the only card of the game, a yellow at 52:37.
Stanford fell to 0-2-0 all-time versus Yale.
"It was a discouraging weekend to lose two games that we led early and could have gone either way," said Simon. "We have a very young team and our lack of experience has hurt us early in the season. We need to gather ourselves because we're going from the frying pan to the fire with our upcoming games against Tulsa and SMU."
Stanford will travel to the Tulsa Tournament for games next Thursday, September 18 and Friday, September 19. The Cardinal will square off with host and No. 21 Tulsa on Thursday (7:35 pm, CT) before facing No. 9 SMU on Friday (5 pm, CT).
