Racing conditions were perfect for senior day as the Cardinal met the California Bears for the last dual race of the season. The Cardinal looked much improved after a regular racing season full of lineup changes.
The first varsity had their best performance of the season as they posted their fasted time of the year finishing seven seconds off the #2 California eight. The second varsity got off to a bad start with a missed stroke and could not gain ground on the faster California boat. The varsity four, in just their second race of the season, fought hard to the finish against two California boats. The Stanford varsity four boat was in second until the final 500 meters of the race and finished just out of range of the Bears. Stanford rowers doubled from the varsity four to the novice four racing that raced an hour later and came up short to the Bears.
Head Coach Aimee Baker comments, "I am really pleased with how this team has stayed positive throughout this challenging season. It is exciting to see their hard work start to pay off with improved speed in the V8 and by closing the margin on California. This performance will give us confidence heading into the Pac-10 Championships."
Graduating seniors Wendy Hoeveler, Melissa Haury, Jenny McColloch, Molly Loeb, Ashley Maloney and Grace Bull Tail raced in their final home race.
Next up for the Cardinal is the Pac-10 Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, CA. Heats and finals will be held on Sunday, May 16 with the top boats vying for bids to the NCAA's.
