Corvallis, Ore. - Senior catcher Jessica Allister homered twice as the Stanford softball team defeated Oregon State, 7-2, in the second game of a doubleheader in Corvallis, Oregon. The Cardinal improve to 43-16, 13-8 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers fall to 40-26, 4-17 in conference play.
Stanford's 13 league wins in a single season is the most in the modern era of a 21-conference game schedule.
OSU opened the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back singles before Adrienne Alo doubled to score two runs and give the Beavers a 2-0 edge.
Jessica Allister broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun to centerfield to lead off the inning. It was her ninth of the season and second on the day. Leah Nelson reached base on an error by the third baseman and Jacki Hansen entered the game as a pinch runner. Elizabeth Bendig bunted Hansen to second on a fielder's choice-sacrifice bunt. Meghan Sickler reached base on another error by the third baseman while Hansen scored to tie up the game at two a piece.
Centerfielder Catalina Morris put down a bunt single to open the sixth inning. Lauren Lappin then doubled down the leftfield line to score Morris. Allister hit her second homerun of the game, a blast to leftfield, to put Stanford up 5-2.
Leftfielder Jackie Rinehart led off the seventh inning with a single. Morris followed with a single down the rightfield line, moving Rinehart to third. Lappin singled through the left side to score Rinehart. Allister picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a ground out to the second baseman.
Senior Dana Sorensen (28-9) picked up her second win of the day, coming into the game in relief of starter Laura Severson. Sorensen pitched 2.2 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Severson went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Oregon State's Monica Hoffman (19-16) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over six innings of work.
Allister now has 30 homeruns for her career, placing her second all-time in the Cardinal record book. She notched two hits, two runs and four RBI on the afternoon. Lauren Lappin also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Catalina Morris collected two hits and two runs as well.
The Cardinal now await word on postseason play as the NCAA Tournament Selection Show will take place tomorrow between 5:30 and 6 p.m. on ESPNews.
