Stanford Men's Crew Competes At Pac 10 Championship

May 19, 2004

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - Over the past weekend, the Cardinal Men competed in the 2004 Pac 10 Championships. The Varsity 8+ finished fourth, the JV 8+ finished fourth and the Frosh/Novice 8+ finished second.

In the first Grand Final of the day, the fourth seeded Cardinal Frosh raced from Lane 4. The first 500m of the race separated Cal from Washington, Oregon State and Stanford. The Cardinal was the closest crew to the Bears, sitting about four seats down. As UW and OSU continued to push for seats, the Cardinal was fearless in their stroke rate and attitude. The Frosh 8+ came to the finish line second with OSU's bowball on the Cardinal stroke with Washington open water down. It was the first silver medal for the Cardinal Frosh since 1987.

The Second Grand Final of the day was the Junior Varsity 8+. In a battle for the bronze, the race had the Cardinal in contention for a medal as the men traded seats with Oregon State. In the last 300m of the race, Oregon State chased the now demoralized Cal JV into a tight finish for 2nd place.

The last Grand Final was an encouraging start for the Varsity 8+. The V8+ was able to put together a strong first 1000m sitting 8 seats off eventual winner Washington and even with Oregon State. The boat came unhinged in the second half of the race to finish fourth for the fourth consecutive year.
