STANFORD, Calif. - Seven Stanford University men's and women's tennis players were selected as Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic, as announced by the league office on Friday.
Four members of the Stanford women's tennis team earned Academic All-Pac-10 honors. Amber Liu was named to the First-Team, while Alice Barnes, Lauren Barnikow and Story Tweedie-Yates garnered Second-Team accolades.
Liu, a sophomore from La Mesa, Calif., was crowned the 2003 NCAA Singles Champion and will be defending that title in the championship match of the 2004 NCAA Singles Tournament at Georgia. This season, Liu has tallied a 24-4 record in singles action at the No. 1 position. She earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors and is ranked No. 7 in singles by the ITA.
Sophomore Barnes has notched a 39-7 overall singles record this season. The Cambridge, UK, native, garnered First-Team All-Pac-10 honors after taking the Pac-10 Tournament doubles title with partner Erin Burdette and placing second in singles competition. She advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship as a top-16 seed.
Barnikow, a senior who hails from Woodbridge, N.J., was named the Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year with Cardinal teammate Erin Burdette for the second-straight season. The duo posted a 31-3 overall record this year. Barnikow also earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors in singles, and took third place in the top flight of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships.
A native of Redmond, Wash., junior Tweedie-Yates recorded an 11-4 record in singles this season. She claimed the Pac-10 Invitational doubles title with partner Theresa Logar.
Three members of the Stanford men's team were selected as Pac-10 All-Academic. Senior captain James Pade were selected as Honorable Mention.
Morris, a Washington, D.C. native, posted a 21-13 overall record for the Cardinal, including an inspiring three-set win that propelled the Cardinal into the quarterfinals in the NCAA Championships. Morris has been equally impressive in the classroom, earning a 3.60 grade-point average in Sociology.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
