Stanford Quotes

Head Coach Buddy Teevens:On Trent Edwards' performance: He took a lot of punishment, but he's a tough guy. He stood right in the face of it and delivered the ball and got better as the game progressed.

On starting 2-0 with wins over San Jose State and BYU, just like last season: I think we're a better football team right now. I think our offensive line is coming along and we're playing better team football. We have a tough schedule ahead, but we are making progress.

Quarterback Trent Edwards
On the game: To win this game is a confidence builder, but we still missed plenty of opportunities. I missed Evan (Moore) a couple of times and those were plays I should have made. It's good to start 2-0 with good offensive performances. We struggled against them last year, and I know the coaches worked hard to prepare us with a solid game plan against BYU.

Tight End Alex Smith:
On the game:
I just think we came in with a really good game plan. We worked very hard this week and had a good plan for the way they play defense. There were a lot of holes in their defense when they bring a lot of pressure, so we felt that if we could get Trent (Edwards) some protection that could really exploit that.

BYU QuotesHead Coach Gary Crowton: It was very disappointing. I think we'll grow from this and be ready to play next week.

It (the injury to QB Matt Berry) just happens. I try to have my guys ready to go. I was happy with how Jason (Beck) played early. He was aggressive. I felt like there was a real good fire in him.

We were able to move the ball. We just weren't able to get in the end zone. That's what we have to do; get in the end zone.

I was trying not to play him (QB John Beck) but Jason was getting pretty beat up. When Jason threw that last interception I just felt like I needed to put somebody else in. They weren't blitzing at the time so I felt like we could get John in and get his feet wet and get him ready for next week.

I was worried about that (the returns) but we played well last week. We did a great job kicking the ball but sometimes you get relaxed.

The quarterback (Trent Edwards) is the biggest difference. He has all those big receivers to go to. Their large targets and they did a great job.

Quarterback Jason Beck: I was excited to go. I was ready. I wasn't expecting to come in so early. I just wanted the team to play well and be ready to do my part. I'm excited to help the team and do whatever I can to help them win. We were able to get drives going then we would stall out and have penalties called. I felt like we could move the ball but we just couldn't finish anything off.
